Communities develop distinctive resources through geography, climate, knowledge, craft, technology, and accumulated experience. Trade gives specialized resources access to larger networks, allowing materials produced in one region to support construction elsewhere, techniques developed within one community to travel through application, commercial relationships to connect previously separate networks, and technologies to acquire new uses through participants carrying different knowledge.
Exchange creates reciprocal access as each participant contributes resources developed from a distinctive position and gains access to complementary resources developed elsewhere. Movement therefore expands the range available to specialized value and increases the productive possibilities created through difference.
